We all are very excited as Halloween approaches. But have we ever thought about how we have Halloween? Halloween is a holiday celebrated on the night of October 31. The word Halloween is a shortening of All Hallows’ Evening also known as Hallowe’en or All Hallows’ Eve.
Traditional activities include trick-or-treating, bonfires, and costume parties, visiting “haunted houses” and carving jack-o-lanterns. Irish and Scottish immigrants carried versions of the tradition to North America in the nineteenth century. Other western countries embraced the holiday in the late twentieth century including Ireland, the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and the United Kingdom as well as of Australia and New Zealand. Halloween has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain (pronounced “sah-win”). The festival of Samhain is a celebration of the end of the harvest season in Gaelic culture. Samhain was a time used by the ancient pagans to take stock of supplies and prepare for winter. The ancient Gaels believed that on October 31, the boundaries between the worlds of the living and the dead overlapped and the deceased would come back to life and cause havoc such as sickness or damaged crops. The festival would frequently involve bonfires. It is believed that the fires attracted insects to the area which attracted bats to the area. These are additional attributes of the history of Halloween. Masks and costumes were worn in an attempt to mimic the evil spirits or appease them. Trick-or-treating, is an activity for children on or around Halloween in which they proceed from house to house in costumes, asking for treats such as confectionery with the question, “Trick or treat?” The “trick” part of “trick or treat” is a threat to play a trick on the homeowner or his property if no treat is given. Trick-or-treating is one of the main traditions of Halloween. It has become socially expected that if one lives in a neighborhood with children one should purchase treats in preparation for trick-or-treaters. The history of Halloween has evolved. The activity is popular in the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, and due to increased American cultural influence in recent years, imported through exposure to US television and other media, trick-or-treating has started to occur among children in many parts of Europe, and in the Saudi Aramco camps of Dhahran. John Muir
A True Conservationist of Nature By Saanvi Agarawal Why are we protecting nature? Why have all the rainforests that were about to get destroyed not? This is because of a man named John Muir. Muir was born on April 21, 1838 in Dunbar. As a child, John Muir loved watching nature. As a teen, Muir spent his most of his life and time to exploring the beautiful wilderness. When Muir spent his time exploring nature and traveling, he often wrote about the places he visited. In the old times, when cattle was grazed and there were farms, Muir noticed many problems. In fact, he noticed that a lot of trees were being cut down to build farmlands and places for the animals in most farms. This concerned Muir, because he knew that trees were important to animals and people. In fact, a paragraph about John Muir states, “Muir believed that nature should be conserved instead of being changed by human beings.” Muir had a strong belief of conserving trees and the environment because otherwise it could create problems for everyone and because of his generous habit for the good of everyone, he wrote in articles and magazines and conveyed the message that trees should be conserved. His hard work to protect nature have paid off because others started to listen. Later, he wrote a letter to the president of the country at the time; President Roosevelt. When the president visited Muir in California, Muir convinced the President that they should go camping to talk about conserving forests and trees. Admiring the young man’s love for nature, the President agreed. After the experience, the President set up 148 million acres of land for national parks and forests. For example, one of the parks is Yosemite National Park, the place that is featured on the back of the California quarter. John Muir died after that, and though it has been quite a while since anyone heard about him, his efforts and work continue today, and people remember him. Other people will start to know about him soon because he really taught us to appreciate the value of forests and trees. As I had explained before, I used this blog as an inspiration to create a website about places to visit which also includes a blog. Here is the link once again and I hope you will visit it! Link: http://saanatripomania.weebly.com/ As I said already, I created a website using this blog as an inspiration. As I said, the website I had created was about places you should visit, and it includes links and a blog so that I can tell you about more places. If you had any questions regarding this blog, my writing blog, or my places website, the link that is blue(that is my places website), if you have questions about that website, there is a blog where you can use the comments. I know that I haven’t written any blog posts since a while but I’m back! Well I have some good news for you! I have started a new website and I used my blog as an inspiration. Here is the link to my new website. http://saanatripomania.weebly.com/ How I started this website story: I was thinking about starting a blog so I started to add pages and slowly started to work on adding pictures to my 2 to 3 pages at the time with my friends as they were making blogs too. We added more pages and pictures and got creative with the buttons because we could link to them. In the next few days, we improvised our pages and gradually we started adding widgets and anything extra that would make our first blogs decorative and attractive. Then we picked our domains and published our site with Weebly. Our posts had been done, with pages and pictures, links to other sites, cool widgets, and online word clouds called Tagxedos. We asked our camp teacher for help and we published. After that, my friends and I started commenting on the blogs and we found adding posts interactive and fun. So after our camp ended, my neighbor and I continued posting on our blogs and then I decided I would start a second blog. I decided my second blog would be about writing, so I did the same thing for my second blog; I worked on it as much as I could. Here is the link: http://iamawritingstar.weebly.com/ After days came and went, I decided I would start a website about traveling. That is how my website was born. I started making pages and wrote on them. I researched day and night to find answers to questions, and only used a few pictures. Then I thought it would be fun to have a blog page so I could explain about even more places and have people comment and add to the discussion. The next day, I published my site and now it is online. Now my website is online. I hope that you will find something to interest yourself and I wish you luck in finding places that are fun for your family and right for you. I created this website to suggest places with information and pictures. Now of course, the website is more exciting than I can describe, so I hope you will visit it. Once again, here is the link to my website and I hope you will enjoy reading through and picking places for you and your family. Here is the link once again: http://saanatripomania.weebly.com/ Debate:
In debate, you state your claim and your arguments. It is an argument of different opinions, basically. First off, you need to pick a debate topic. This can be picked by your moderator or by your friends or if you’re a teacher, by your students. List some ideas for debate topics first and pick the best one. Next, figure out what your claim is going to be. For example, if my debate topic was about whether or not animals should be tested on for new products, I would say no. So in other words, my claim would be: Animals should not be tested for new products, like medicine or other products. After that, make a list of arguments that support the claim of your debate topic. Think of as many meaningful argument ideas as you can because the more ideas you have, the more possibilities you will be able to choose from. You should pick the two or two strongest arguments. If your arguments are not strong, you will have difficulty listing your points for them and proving them. So pick good ones you will be able to prove. Once you finish picking your strongest arguments, take two sheets of paper. Start by listing your argument. Take this as an example. Then you should list all your points. Argument 1: Animal Cruelty and Abuse
This summer, I attended a debate camp in International Ivy. We learned about the types of debate:
Lincoln Douglass Debate Public Forum Debate Original Debate What do you do in a debate? First, plan your debate. Let's take a look at the example: You should plan like this: First, make an opening statement. Your opening statement should include some background info like what happened when there were no cell phones in the olden days to introduce the topic. Then come up with ideas for your arguments. Pick your strongest arguments and if your topic requires research, go online to go look for facts to back up your arguments. Then plan a strong closing statement. That should get your ready for a debate. You should list all of your points that go with each argument. Watch a sample to know more. International Ivy really is fun! You want to go on a memorable and lifetime vacation. But you don't know how to or what to do. Your parents don't know which rooms to book in, or what to do there. But they do know that they have to check out the things that you can do there. So, if you really want to have a great vacation, these are some great tips for going on a great vacation.
First off, check the website. So if the place has a website, check out the website. For example, let’s say you want to go to the Liberty Science Center. Click on their website first. http://lsc.org/ On their website, explore and try to see what things they have there, like what kinds of exhibits there are, or their calendar to see what dates they are available or what events are happening. Secondly, once you have explore enough, click the tab “Visit us” and see some of their rules by scrolling to the bottom of the page. Once you have seen some of the rules to follow, stay on that tab and click parking info and directions. If you just want to see the map to see what places are close to your location, you should click “Map it”. Or on the top of the page, click “Directions” to see how to go there. Another good thing to do is to check out other people’s reviews. People give out great reviews for you to check out because they have already been to the place. So you would want to check out the reviews. Based on the reviews, and what they have there, and the parking info, and directions, plan your tickets for a suitable time. Oh, here is one tip I almost forgot to tell you: Pack accordingly and check out the rules for what to pack and what not to pack. Have a great tip and I hope that my tips have helped you plan a memorable and lifetime experience! |
